Make use of Android Studio’s ‘Instant Run’
Note, since Android Studio is now the recommended development environment for Android, all of these tips are geared towards Android Studio, although some of them will be applicable to Eclipse users, too. In this article, I’m going to share 6 tips and tricks for supercharging the Android SDK’s built-in emulator. The good news is, the emulator doesn’t have to leave you tearing your hair out. The emulator has improved in recent years, so it’s nowhere near as slow as it used to be, but testing on the emulator can still be a frustrating experience, particularly if you need to keep switching between multiple Android Virtual Devices (AVDs).

A seriously long time.ĭespite this drawback, the emulator is still the best way to test how your app translates across multiple hardware and software configurations-so there’s no getting away from the fact: sooner or later you’re going to have to boot up the emulator. Better get comfortable, because the emulator takes a long time to load. However, the emulator does have one massive flaw, which becomes glaringly obvious the first time you launch it. It gives you the ability to test your Android projects across more devices than you could ever realistically hope to get your hands on. Once Google Play Services has applied the latest version fix for your OS, you should be good to go ( Figure K).The emulator is one of the most powerful tools in the Android developer’s arsenal. If you don't see a textbox after a few taps telling you the service is up to date, close down and restart your emulator and repeat steps 11, 12, and 13.ġ4. Scroll all the way down to the Build Version cell and tap it a couple times ( Figure J).ġ3. Now that the emulator is connected to a Google Account launch the Play Store and bring up the Settings ( Figure I).ġ2. Proceed with the standard Google Account Setup Wizard ( Figure H).ġ1. From within Settings choose Accounts ( Figure G).ġ0. Open Settings on the virtual instance of the Android OS ( Figure F).ĩ.
For this to happen, you must either connect it to an existing or a new Google account. To stop the crashing Google Play Services on the virtual device needs to update. However, Google Play Services will frequently crash ( Figure E).Ĩ. At this point, you will be able to see the Google Play Store icon on the emulator ( Figure D).ħ. Click OK again, then shut down the Genymotion emulator and restart it.Ħ.

Download the signed Google Play Services ZIP file (for Jelly Bean) and save it locally on your Mac or PC.
